The Certified International Trade Professional (CITP®|FIBP®) designation is the world’s leading professional designation for international business. So whether you’re new to the industry or have over a decade of experience,  the CITP®|FIBP® designation will help you earn a competitive advantage within your industry, build credibility with clients, colleagues and co-workers, and land new jobs and promotions.

The CITP®|FIBP® designation sets you apart in the competitive international business industry because it’s proof you possess the competencies global business experts have identified as being essential for a successful career in international trade.

It also recognizes your commitment to global trade as a profession, dedication to ethical business practices and ongoing professional development—desirable traits for today’s global business practitioners.

The CITP®|FIBP® designation and FITT’s training have been officially endorsed by the Canadian government, Export Development Canada and the World Trade Centers Association (WTCA), which currently operates in 88 countries worldwide.

The CITP®|FIBP® designation is also increasingly listed as an asset or requirement in job listings for a wide range of international positions. Go to the jobs section in our TradeReady blog and view the featured listings at the top of the page to see the latest positions seeking candidates with the CITP®|FIBP® designation.

If you work in international business in any capacity, or aspire to do so, the CITP®|FIBP® designation is the right choice for you.

Whether you work in import/export, logistics and supply chain management, marketing, business development, sales, law, finance, or other fields, the CITP®|FIBP® designation is proof you have the competencies needed to compete with global players. It’s also equally valuable for professionals at all career stages, whether you’re still only a year or two into your career or an expert with decades of experience.

What’s common among all CITP®|FIBP® designation holders is that they’re active in international trade in some form, and they recognize the value of professional certification for career advancement, credibility and proof of their skills and knowledge.

To qualify for the CITP®|FIBP® designation, you must have successfully completed the FITTskills program, or equivalency thereof, and you must have a minimum one year of professional international business experience.

There are three steps to meet the requirements to apply for the CITP®|FIBP® designation. Choose the option that’s right for you based on your level of education and experience in global business.

You’ll also need to agree to the CITP®|FIBP® Standards of Ethical Conduct, commit to ongoing professional development and pay the annual Certified Membership dues.

There is no single exam to become a CITP®|FIBP®. For more information on how to apply for and earn the designation, please visit (new How to page).

Yes! You can use your prior learning experience to earn FITTskills course credits to work towards earning the FITT Diploma in International Trade, one of the steps towards earning the certification. To do so, submit your portfolio and complete the professional exam. If you are missing some credits, take part in as many FITTskills courses as you need.

Highly experienced international business professionals with more than 10 years in the field can apply directly for the designation, without having to take any courses or complete any exams or assessments.

Visit the Professional Experience Requirements page for more details on what counts as international trade work experience, and view some examples. If that doesn’t answer your question, please send an email to membership@fitt.ca.

There is a cost of $270 CAD included in your CITP®|FIBP® application, which covers your first year of certification. If your CITP®|FIBP® application is not approved, this cost is fully refunded.

There may also be additional costs to meet the criteria to apply for the designation before you can submit your application, such as courses or workshops, or submitting a Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) portfolio.

Once you have submitted your CITP®|FIBP® application, you should receive an email stating your application has been received, along with an email copy of your receipt. Most applications will be reviewed by FITT staff, while applications by those with 10 or more years of experience are also reviewed by the Certification and Accreditation Committee (CAC), which meets on a monthly basis.

The process to review and finalize your application often takes several weeks, and may be affected by the volume of applications, time needed to speak with your contacts or other factors.

You will next be contacted when the review of your application has been completed and its status can be finalized. Please do not be concerned if you have submitted your application and have not received any updates in the weeks since the initial confirmation – this timeline is within normal guidelines and does not reflect negatively on the status of your application in any way.

To maintain your CITP®|FIBP® designation you must remain a member in good standing by paying your annual FITT CITP®|FIBP® dues. We also recommend that all CITP®|FIBP® designation holders undertake at least 30 hours of professional development each year to maintain their industry knowledge and skills.

CITP®|FIBP® designation holders are required to agree to and comply with the concepts of competency and integrity detailed in our CITP®|FIBP® Standards of Ethical Conduct guide. These standards provide direction for CITP®|FIBP® professional-conduct in terms of responsibilities to individuals, organizations, the community and the profession. This guide also addresses issues of conflict of interest.

The cost to renew the CITP®|FIBP® designation each year is $270, the same as the cost for your first year of certification included in the original application.

To access it, go to your FITT user page, sign in, then click FITT Members from the menu on the main part of the screen and Membership Renewal from the resulting dropdown menu.

On FITT’s website, you can use the Membership Directory to find CITPs and other members by name, title, company and location. CITPs also have access to the Speakers Bureau, where they can add their name for potential speaking opportunities or look for speakers for events.

On social media, you can join the CITP group on LinkedIn, or follow FITT’s pages on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. We also host monthly #TradeElite Twitter chats with CITPs and other expert professionals as moderators or panelists – to learn more about this opportunity, please send an email to marketing@fitt.ca.

On our TradeReady blog, you can learn more about other CITP designation holders who have been profiled through our CITP Spotlights. If you’re a CITP and would like to be profiled in a CITP Spotlight article, please send an email to marketing@fitt.ca to get started.

Due to various privacy concerns, you must manually opt in to be listed in the Membership Directory.

To add yourself, first sign in to the FITT website. Once you’ve done so, click FITT Members from the menu on the main part of the screen and My Profile from the resulting dropdown menu.

Once you’re there, you’ll see a field where you can write a short bio about yourself, and a list of checkboxes allowing you to control which information is listed in the directory along with your name. You’re free to include as many or as few of those fields as you choose. Once you’re done, just click save at the bottom, and you will appear in the directory.
